Metro Newspapers are contributing to the Bach Society by offering to advertise and promote Society programs through the end of the Year 2001. We thank Mr. and Mrs. David Cohen, publishers of the Metro, who have become new Members, for this generous offer.

The question may arise as to why a small non-profit (the Bach Society) should have to budget for, or spend its limited resources to advertise our programming, especially considering our longevity and strong support from Members and attendees over the years. Perhaps our very longevity as a music venue (37 years) forces us to remind our past audiences, as well as future music lovers, that we are still here, presenting live music. The Bach has always presented alternative music, not necessarily music that currently has much commercial value. We've chosen to book Jazz, Classical and World Music for its musical value and integrity, with artists who best can express their musical language – from Bach to BeBop, from World Traditional to World Beat music.

?Further, we have always been a destination venue, not located in a high density area. Therefore, people must drive considerable distance to attend our offerings. There has been a consistent rumor through the years that the Bach has been full, if not overly full, for most programs. That's true only when we've presented musicians with high notoriety in our region, or in their music specialty. Alas, we have not reached many audiences who might have wanted to attend. Sadly, many were not here (in a half-full house) for many of the most exciting top-tier performances. We have now sought help from those best suited to get our message out to our musical demographics. Yours,

Pete Douglas, Concert Manager

Why, you may ask, is it really necessary to carry on the musical legacy of the Bach Society and Douglas Beach House when one could eventually hear the same talent in other venues throughout the country? Perhaps it's because in tomorrow's music market it will be increasingly difficult for people to hear, see or even afford certain live music in conditions that maximize the musical value. Music is not just a product for sale. It is what culturally sustains our emotional life. A legacy should continue existing efforts to seek and experience musical authenticity, not kitsch, in music making.

Ian Dogole

August 19th — Sunday, 4:30 pm: Ian Dogole and Global Fusion.
Multi-percussionist, Ian Dogole will be joined by an all-star sextet, including Paul McCandless on woodwinds, as featured on their new recording "Night Harvest." In addition to original works by Ian and McCandless, the group will perform pieces by McCoy Tyner and Thelonious Monk, featuring saxman Gary Byas. Knowing Ian and his music, we feel this group is a superior and exciting example of World music. Contr. 20.

Lonnie Smith

August 26th — Sunday, 4:30 pm: Blues on the B3 Organ, Part 3, featuring Dr. Lonnie Smith on the Hammond Organ and his Trio.
Hosting the program once again, will be Afrikahn Dayvs of KUPP 91.5 Radio. Critically acclaimed by many as the greatest living Jazz/Blues organist in the world, Lonnie has worked with such diverse Jazz players as Lou Donaldson and Dizzy Gillespie, as well as R&B performers George Benson and Gladys Knight. As "Doctor Funk" and the "Soul Man of Jazz," no one surpasses his expressive talent on the organ. Contr. $26.

Larry Vuckovich

September 2nd — Sunday, 4:30 pm: Young at Heart – a seven piece ensemble lead by pianist Larry Vuckovich.
This band, with their CD by the same name, was a hit at the Monterey Jazz Fest in 2000 and has received top national airplay and press. Starting with the Swing of Lester Young and Count Basie, they'll move into the more modern era of Miles Davis and Coltrane. Featured musicians include Harold Jones, formerly with Basie, and Louis Romero as the Afro-Cuban percussionist. This band swings up a storm, blowing the Jazz of the 40s thru the 60s – ya dig? Contr. $21.

Jane Bunnett

September 9th — Sunday, 4:30 pm: Jane Bunnett and the Spirit of Havana – a seven piece Cuban group led by Jazz flute & soprano sax player, Jane Bunnett, with her husband Larry Cramer on trumpet.
While living and performing with Cuban percussionists for two decades as a Blue Note recording artist, Jane developed a synthesis of Jazz and Traditional Cuban music –- long before the current notoriety of the Buena Vista Social Club. Jane's fiery improvisation, over varied rhythms of the Caribbean, is one exciting experience. Contr. $22.

Lynne Arriale

September 16th — Sunday, 4:30 pm: Jazz pianist, Lynne Arriale and Trio, featuring Jay Anderson, bass and Steve Davis on drums. On her sixth album, recorded live at the Montreaux Jazz Fest in 1999, Lynne has reached another dazzling peak in her musical career. Performing in the more introspective tradition of Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett, her development on the melody line is superlative. Lynne should now take her rightful place alongside Brad Mehldau and Jacky Terrason as one of the vital new voices on the Jazz scene. Contr. $21.

Mariano Cordoba

September 29th – Saturday Evening, 8:30 pm: Flamenco Guitarist, Mariano Cordoba
in a concert of 500 years of Traditional Spanish music – a confluence through the centuries of Native Gypsy, Moorish, and Jewish sounds. featuring 10 comedians, and hosted by Dan St. Paul. Five finalists will be chosen by celebrity judges from the press and media. This annual show has been a huge success over recent years. Enjoy. Contr. $25.

Dena DeRose

November 4th — Sunday, 4:30 pm: Singer/Pianist, Dena DeRose & Trio.
On her third album, "I Can See Clearly Now," Dena has garnered the highest praise as a Jazz musician's singer. Joel Segal, critic in New York, claims DeRose is becoming an exclusive member in the company of musicians (notably Nat Cole and Shirley Horn), able to sing and play piano with equal distinction. Though Harry Connick Jr. and Diana Krall get all the hype, DeRose is the real deal. Contr. $22.

Harry Allen

November 11th — Sunday, 4:30 pm: Tenorman, Harry Allen and Quartet.
As a young man in his 30's, Harry has been featured soloist on multiple albums with such Jazz giants as Kenny Barron, Milt Hilton and Clark Terry. Swinging in the tradition of Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster of the 30s and 40s, he's performed in all the international festivals. His current album as leader reflects the styling of Stan Getz and Zoot Sims, so much so the critics have been astounded. With Scott Hamilton as his mentor, Harry is carrying the Golden Age of Jazz to the new audiences. Contr. $20.

St. Lawrence String Quartet

November 17th – Saturday, 8 pm: St. Lawrence String Quartet.
Described as "a quartet of stars" by Le Monde of Paris, they have had rave reviews follow them through their tours around the world. With a multi-record contract with EMI Classics, and currently on the faculty at Stanford University, the Quartet won first prizes at both the Young Concert Artists International Auditions and the Banff String Quartet Competition. They have been quartet-in-residence at Julliard, as well as Yale and Hartford Universities. Contr. $20.

She later made a debut recording by National Public Radio at the Frick Collection in New York.
