HISTORY:
Laymen's Retreat Project, Inc., also known as Shadybrook, began in 1955 as a non-profit, nondenominational organization to promote religious, educational and charitable purposes. Disturbed about human atrocities in World War II, the Shadybrook founders established this center under the guidance of people with interpersonal and humanitarian skills as a volunteer organization to which people contribute their time, money and energy.
FUNDING:
Financial support comes from program fees and tax deductible contributions, such as gifts, grants and fund raising. Bequests make it possible to expand the scope of our activities. Public spaces are rented as needed for weekend and monthly meetings and leaders' fees are underwritten from Shadybrook funds. The programs aim to serve interested people and generally to further spirituality for us all.
MEMBERSHIP:
People who want to become members may join the Shadybrook community by attending any of the activities listed below. When they make a donation of twenty-five dollars (thirty-five for a family), they will receive all mailings and program announcements and may vote at the Annual Meeting.
PROGRAM:
Shadybrook has three kinds of programs at present.
* Evening Programs, held monthly at a convenient location, are led by members or outside facilitators. Discussion follows the presentation, and you are welcome to attend at any time. Donations are accepted.
* Study Circles are held weekly for a series of sessions around a partlcular topic of interest. These are informal sessions held in members' homes, where informal circumstances invite a free exchange of ideas. No donation is asked.
* Weekend Retreats are held periodically at a local retreat facilitv from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon. The cost includes room, board and the program. The leaders are qualified retreat facilitators, and their fees are prorated. The emphasis is on personal growth topics and enjoyment of the company in a quiet settlng.
